“Europa Prima Pars Terrae in forma Virgins” original woodcut, Hannover, 1581, copper engraving, 24.5 x 34.5 cm, passe-partout, glass, frame, previously restored, taped and partially added in the cracks, occasionally dark paper browning.
Protestant theologian Heinrich de Bunting portrayed the map of Europe as the figure of the Queen. The portrayal of Europe as the Queen has its roots in the 14th century, the figure of a woman represents the Mother of the Church who is led away from the real path. In 1537 Tyrol cartographer Johann Putsch celebrated Habsburg rule over Europe by introducing a tranquil “Regina Europe” that wore Charles V’s Spain as a crown and Ferdinand's Austria as a medal at the waist representing thereby the triumph of the Habsburgs. The Queen's Crown (Spain), the Imperial Apple (Sicily) and the Heart (Bohemia) form a triangle that directs the viewing eye from Eastern Europe towards the West. Her skirt is composed of the Baltic and Greece, while Turkey and Russia are under her feet. The later edition of Europe as the Queen was published by Sebastian Münster, Heinrich Bunting and Matthias Quad.
